OMG!
Do they think it was terror related? They probably wouldn't say even if they thought so. |

The Army seems to be trying to keep it plain vanilla for now. I think they know more than they're telling.
No word on specific crime scene. They said he used two hand guns. Hard to believe one guy could hit that many targets with handguns before being taken down. Some news guy or blog is saying the "two suspects" have been released but authorities are looking for another person. It is being reported on the networks that the dead shooter was from Virginia and is a recent convert to Islam. No eyewitness accounts from survivors as yet. I SPECULATE that it is an act of personal terrorism but that's just a personal thought. Update briefing from Ft Hood expected in a few minutes. |

Rog' on the psyc but I'm leaning toward single shooter now. One of his med associates was interviewed a few minutes ago and said the shooter was hostile to US policy in Iraq/Afghan and had suggested muslims in the US should strike out in a violent way. Still, at this point, there is too much we don't know... |

Would an Army psychiatrist have sniper or sharpshooter training? How could one person kill and/or injure so many people (about 40) with 2 handguns? How many times would he have to stop and reload? How many times would he have fired and missed? Just being around on base, would military personnel normally be armed?

Only MPs, guards and soldiers in an active training environment. |

I heard on this morning's NPR news that the shooter survived but he's on a ventilator so hasn't been interviewed yet - the General in charge said
he was in stable condition. If he's able to pay for his crimes in the here and now, surviving could be a good thing. (That sounds a little Old Testament,
doesn't it?) At least he won't be greeting Allah as a martyr and getting the promised 72 virgins.

Wonder why this guy wasn't on somebody's radar...
I think he was but, from what I know at this point, I suspect that the climate of political correctness, prevented issues from being elevated and properly evaluated. The following item appeared on the website of an NBC-TV affiliate. I must admit when I saw the president come on TV, I was shocked that he began by talking about the organizers of some government agency conference. A WTF moment for me. After news broke out of the shooting at the Fort Hood Army post in Texas, the nation watched in horror as the toll of dead and injured climbed. The White House was notified immediately and by late afternoon, word went out that the president would speak about the incident prior to a previously scheduled appearance. At about 5 p.m., cable stations went to the president. The situation called for not only his trademark eloquence, but also grace and perspective. But instead of a somber chief executive offering reassuring words and expressions of sympathy and compassion, viewers saw a wildly disconnected and inappropriately light president making introductory remarks. At the event, a Tribal Nations Conference hosted by the Department of Interior's Bureau of Indian affairs, the president thanked various staffers and offered a "shout-out" to "Dr. Joe Medicine Crow -- that Congressional Medal of Honor winner." Three minutes in, the president spoke about the shooting, in measured and appropriate terms. Who is advising him? Anyone at home aware of the major news story of the previous hours had to have been stunned. An incident like this requires a scrapping of the early light banter. |

Today is the funeral for a local soldier that died last week in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan and yet, we have this tragedy in Killeen, a somber day
indeed, the main road US 80 is lined with American flags for the local boy, they all gave too much to serve.......

If anyone has comments regarding the timeline in which the President addressed reporters is simply attempting to create something from nothing! This was a
tragic event at one of nation's largest military bases, if the President waited for more details to emerge before addressing it, then that was his
perogative. For any sniping or cheap shots to take place is disrespectful to the dead and injured soldiers!!!

I've been involved in enough of these kind of appearances (not as president, of course :-) to assure you he didn't go on camera before knowing what his message was. He was put on TV for ONE reason - to comment on a tragedy that we didn't know much about. His demeanor for the first two minutes was not even serious, much less somber. One comment I read today reflected my own feelings when I saw him - that the network had messed up and was showing some tape from a different Obama appearance, earlier in the day. FWIW, everything "official" being said about the shootings so far is being controlled by the WH. So far they had made some senior army people look pretty foolish. |

Two soldiers from the area killed in Ft. Hood.
One down the block killed in Afghanistan 10 days ago. The entire military situation deserves more than a frivolous "shout out". Obama knew before the red light came on what the situation was at Ft. Hood. This and his once a quarter meeting with his hand picked general in Afghanistan.... what does this say about the man? |

I agree with Gregg on this one; this wasn't a press conference called because of the Ft Hood shooting - it was a previously scheduled appearance. I think
the criticism of the President on this is out of line.

VA.....
The subject of the press conference should have been changed. But Obama is such a political animal he had to get his points in before commenting on the most serious matter at hand. So much like GWB when he was notified of the twin tower attacks. Wrong then; wrong now. |

Since you asked, let's take a look, OK | ||

How dare you even compare the two.
Obama had had several hours to take reports of the attack and to decide how to address it. He did not have an aide whisper the news of the attack in his ear as he addressed the scheduled gathering. But Obama chose to deliver two-and-a-half minutes of political pandering to a small group before mentioning the massacre and addressing the national audience that was watching. There was a reason the networks put him on live TV and why viewers anticipated his remarks - It wasn't to listen to casual remarks to some conference organizers and attendees. It would have been so simple - and right - for the president to address the nation and not the people in the room (an aide should have announced that the president would address the nation before talking with them about the conference.) Although Michael Moore and other Bush-haters transformed a few moments in a Florida classroom into an agonizingly protracted period of indecision and cynical calculation, George W. Bush on Sept. 11, 2001 had to internalize and respond to the news that a second plane had crashed into the WTC in real time. It is good to think before acting. It is good for a leader to not cause panic. I have always been comfortable with Bush's reaction. I am less impressed with the "system" surrounding him. IMO, the system was slow to take some actions that they constantly train for. As a footnote, remember that the current president did not go into immediate emergency response mode when a commercial airliner crashed into the Hudson River. And, remember, we recently had another commercial airliner out of contact for about three hours when the pilots chose to play with their laptops instead of fly the plane. In this administration and all others, the best laid plans often prove worthless when surprise happens. Surprise happened to George Bush on 9/11. Surprise did not happen to Barrack Obama when he stepped before the cameras on Wednesday afternoon. He had several hours headstart on the situation and his performance was disappointing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0hiw8iXdMM&feature=player_embedded |

While the media turns itself inside out struggle to find a motive for Major Muslim's jihad , to this interview on NPR, Listen to a psychiatrist's recollection of a lecture Hasan gave (a "grand round" is the term for it) when he was a medical resident at Walter
Reed. "It freaked them out." Normally, a lecturer focuses on a particular disease or disorder and recent research or treatment options. Instead,
Hasan reportedly harangued the doctors and staff about what the Quran taught about non-believers going to hell, being scalded, beheaded, etc. A Muslim
psychiatrist in the audience reportedly challenged him about his interpretation of the Quran, but he would not back down

FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) ― Former President George W. Bush and

The Bushes made their private visit to Fort Hood's Darnall Army Medical Center on Friday night. Bush spokesman David Sherzer said in an e-mail that the couple thanked Fort Hood's military leaders and hospital staff for the "amazing care they are providing." President Obama, meanwhile, is also scheduled to spend time at a military installation this weekend - Camp David The president visited wounded soldiers on Friday, at Walter Reed - his first visit to that hospital since taking office. |
